Facing global and local challenges: the new dynamics for the Higher Education was the topic in Macau, China
With the goal to reflect on the main advances and trends in Higher Education, the Asia-Pacific Sub-regional Preparatory Conference was held September 25 and 26, 2008 in Macau, China. Themes such as social responsibility of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, Trends and reform aspects in Higher Education were discussed. Likewise the member States reported their status to follow the monitoring in preparation for the World Conference on Higher Education 2009. A total of two hundred people from 32 countries attended this conference. The results of this conference will contribute to the debate in the World Conference on Higher Education, WCHE 2009 that will take place in Paris in July 2009. The Asia-Pacific Sub-regional Preparatory Conference was co-organized and co-sponsored by APEID, UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau of Education, Bangkok and Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. Including this conference, two of the five world regions have already carried out their preparatory meeting for the World Conference on Higher Education. The Regional Conference of Higher Education for Latin America and the Caribbean, CRES 2008 took place in Cartagena, Colombia last June, with more than 3.500 people attending from 37 countries. An Action Plan was the result of the meeting and it is currently under implementation in different nations of the region. The WCHE is world forum to discuss and debate the rapid changes of Higher Education, research, proposals and action plans that can support sustainable development.
