The "Forum of Books, Reading, and Libraries in the Knowledge Society" is currently taking place in Chile. This outstanding event on the busy agenda of higher education in the region will discuss the future of books to the year 2020. It will also foster discussion about reading and libraries in the knowledge society.
There is a great need to design strategic policies and lines of action in the countries of the region, seeking a balance between copyright and the access of society to information, treating limitations and exceptions to copyright, the development of library systems in the digital environment, the absolute need for technological transition, and to seek an ideal format for constructing digital and hybrid libraries.

The Director-General of UNESCO opens Information Meeting on 2009 World Conference on Higher Education
 On Tuesday October 28th, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr. Koïchiro Matsuura, opened an Information Meeting for Permanent Delegates on the 2009 World Conference on Higher Education (WCHE).

Argentina adheres to CRES 2008
 This October, the Republic of Argentina formalized its adhesion to the Declaration of the Regional Conference on Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (CRES) 2008, through approval of a resolution presented to the Argentine Senate by Senator Blanca Osuna.

IESALC attended the 40th anniversary University of Suriname
 With the presence of Dr. José Renato Carvalho of IESALC, on November 1st was commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Anton de Kom University of Suriname, located in Paramaribo. The President of Suriname, Dr. Runaldo Ronald Venetiaan, also attended to the event.

Panama will hold the first prepatory meeting for the creation of ENLACES
The creation of a Latin American and Caribbean Higher Education Meeting Area (transladed in Spanish as ENLANCES) is one of the fundamental objectives of CRES 2008, the Regional Conference on Higher Education of Latin America and the Caribbean. Therefore, from November 06 – 07 at the Universidad de Panamá a working session will be held in order to advance the fulfilment of this goal.
