A year ago we held the Regional Conference on Higher Education of Latin America and the Caribbean, known as CRES 2008 in Spanish, in the city of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. The main objective of the conference was to put together a joint proposal for our region to present during the World Conference on Higher Education to be held in Paris from July 6 to 8. With less than a month to go, we have travelled a long road in which governments, academics, civil society and students have actively participated in developing these proposals and creating an innovative area of convergence on higher education such as ENLACES. In these meetings, forums, and seminars we have discussed the different themes of the World Conference from a regional perspective, and have moved forward in various concrete actions resulting from the Action Plan of CRES 2008.
     
 
 
Enlaces project comes together
The III Meeting of University Networks and Councils of Chancellors of Latin America and the Caribbean ended on June 02 with the Declaration of Lima and its affirmation that “higher education is decisive for guaranteeing the sustainable development and progress of our peoples” (Declaration of Lima, 2009)
 
 
Private sector-university links are possible and necessary
Dr. Carlos Tünnermann Berheim, a recognized academic within higher education, a member of the UNESCO Scientific Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean, and highly distinguished within his own country, Nicaragua, and in the Latin American region due to his contributions in this area, has written recently about the relation between the private sector and universities.
 
 
A look at the Caribbean, ESS Magazine
Issue Nº 2, 2009 of the journal Higher Education and Society (UNESCO IESALC) focuses on the English-speaking countries of the Caribbean, their questions and challenges regarding higher education. While educational institutions are notoriously conservative and indifferent to changes within the societies in which they function, pressures that demand adjustments are being felt.
 
Marketing, or an Education Model?
Even with negotiations with the WTO not yet concluded for reaching an agreement in regard to the marketing of education within the framework of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) some countries have already accepted the influence of international institutions regarding the idea of education as a business.
