Mexico, in association with the United Nations System, will host the 2010 World Youth Conference, from August 23rd – 27th in León, Guanajuato. The event will provide a forum for discussion and reflection on the role of youth in the pursuit of development, with a special emphasis on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

With five years to complete the development goals by the deadline agreed on by the international community  in 2000, we need a vision of these objectives that focuses on youth, which is essential in making lasting, progressive and long term efforts.

The 2010 Conference will have three areas of participation, each corresponding to the three social agents who are strategic to enabling the full participation of youth in development.  The three areas include a Government forum, a Forum of Legislators, and young people and nongovernmental organizations will create the Social Forum.

As a meeting place of representatives from government and civil society organizations, which aims to identify action priorities for youth services in relation to the international development agenda and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), with a view to 2015 and beyond, the conference aims to achieve the following objectives:

- Agree on a Declaration of governments to identify action priorities for youth policy and development, to be presented at the 65th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

- Promote the establishment of a mechanism to follow up specifically on the youth agenda in the United Nations system.

- Encourage dialogue between civil society organizations, governments and parliamentarians on youth and development policies, to better understand the priorities and needs of youths worldwide.

- Share experiences and knowledge about diagnosis, policies, strategies and programs on youth and development.

In turn, CMJ 2010 will have the following topics of its agenda: poverty and exclusion; employment; equation, technology and innovation; health; gender equality; security, social justice and human rights; sustainable development; international migration; participation and influence; global partnership and cooperation.

Spaces of Participation

The Government Forum presented their results in a Declaration that established suggestions and recommendations for governments on measures to consider and take on the issue of youth development, with a view to 2015 and beyond.

The governments of countries participating in the International Committee will be responsible for preparing the draft Declaration to be presented for discussion and approval, as appropriate, at the Government Forum of CMJ 2010. Once all recommendations are collected, the International Committee will present a second draft of the Declaration during their meeting on June 10th.

This document established recommendations for governments on methods regarding youth and development, looking forward to 2015 and beyond, and will be presented to the 65th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
