October 2017, UNESCO-IESALC Projections


Throughout these four months, the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNESCO-IESALC) along with the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba (UNC), the National Inter-University Council of Argentina (CIN in spanish) and the Secretariat for University Policies at the Ministry of Education and Sports of Argentina (SPU in spanish) opened a virtual space for exchange of ideas related to the thematic axes considered in the Third Regional Conference on Higher Education (CRES) that will be held from June 11 to 15 in Cordoba, Argentina. The people interested in higher education (HE) can participate actively in the debates until November 10, and their contributions will serve as input for the organization of ideas of the respective academic teams in relation to the conceptual guidelines for the official documents of the Conference. 

Launch of the last debate cycle of virtual forums

The last cycle of virtual forums, opened from October 11 to November 10, will gather the conclusions and recommendations of the participants on the seven main themes of the III Regional Conference on Higher Education (CRES), which will be held from June 11 to June 15 June 2018, in Córdoba, Argentina. 
Propitious Meeting for the Promotion of Interculturality in Higher Education
The proposal of transforming Higher Education institutions in order that they be more pertinent to the cultural diversity of Latin American societies stems from the Final Declaration of the Regional Conference on Higher Education (RCHE) which took place in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, on June, 2008. This principle was the pivotal theme of the International Colloquium on Higher Education and Indigenous and Afrodescendant Peoples in Latin America. Public policies: possibilities, obstacles and challenges, held from October 4th to October 6th,   at the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero (National University February Third) (UNTREF) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 
Joint Message on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day 2017

Teachers are a critical foundation of every society’s long-term strength, providing children, young people and adults with the knowledge and skills they need to fulfill their potential.  

But around the world, far too many teachers don’t have the freedom and support they need to do their vitally important jobs. That is why the theme of this year’s World Teachers’ Day –“Teaching in Freedom, Empowering Teachers” – reaffirms the value of empowered teachers and recognizes the challenges many encounter in their professional lives across the globe.

Regional Preparatory Meeting of the Axe Higher Education, Cultural Diversity an Interculturality in Latin America and the Caribbean
The team in charge of the Axe Higher Education, Cultural Diversity an Interculturality in Latin America of the RCHE 2018 held a preparatory meeting on Friday October 6th and Saturday October 7th at the Universidad Nacional Tres de Febrero (National University February 3rd). The meeting was attended by Dr. Francisco Tamarit, RCHE 2018 General Director and by Professor Pedro Henríquez Guajardo, UNESCO-IESALC Director. 
Audrey Azoulay nominated by UNESCO Executive Board for the post of Director-General

The 58 members of UNESCO’s Executive Board on 13 October nominated Audrey Azoulay of France for the position of Director-General of the Organization, replacing outgoing Director-General Irina Bokova.

The nomination will be submitted to the vote of the General Conference that brings together all 195 Member States of the Organization every two years on 10 November. 

Second Preliminary Meeting of the Axis of Higher Education as Part of the Education System in Latin America and the Caribbean
The team of researchers in charge of the thematic axis "Higher education as part of the education system in Latin America and the Caribbean" of the III Regional Conference on Higher Education (CRES in spanish), met on October 19 and 20 at the headquarters of the Interuniversity Development Center (CINDA) in Santiago de Chile. Its objective was to analyze the progress of regional studies related to the quality of higher education (HE), as well as to share points of view that contribute to the preparation of the proposals that will be presented in CRES 2018 on this central theme.
